Know the different between VPS and VPN

Two terms are usually confused by those who do not know their meaning: VPS and VPN. In this blog, you will learn more about these two terms. You will also learn how to use them to improve your web page or blog efficiently.

What is Virtual Private Server (VPS)?

A VPS is Virtual Private Server. It is a service that is provided by a web hosting company. Its purpose is to host some applications or web pages by providing a remote access server to carry out its use more privately.

This virtual server offers you the possibility of being managed by yourself. Therefore, you can upload content, delete, configure, and more since it is a computer that you will use at your disposal.

However, the resources of this server are shared by other people, having a space allocated only for you that you can manage only you and call it a virtual private server.

A VPS can be constituted by individual machines where said machine is offered according to its characteristics, or it can be a high-performance server where a section of this is assigned with specific characteristics to the client.

How does VPS work?

The VPS is characterized by being a physical machine divided into several virtual compartments, configuring the software separately. Therefore, each partition functions as a separate machine that is assigned to the user for its different uses.

In the case of VPS hosting, a physical system can host several websites. However, if you have a website, it will be hosted in the space that was allocated (taking into account that the consumption of the servers is independent such as CPU, RAM, space on disk, etc.) for you.

A VPS is a fundamental tool for any project or work that needs to host information, a server or even an online game because its use is aimed at these purposes.

The administration of a VPS is done remotely. This is where the user can access it through the Windows remote desktop or with remote assistance programs such as Team Viewer. This way, the VPS is fully available to the person who uses it.

Finally, keep in mind that a VPS can have different characteristics according to its payment plans offered by the provider. This must be adjusted to the client’s requirements for what he is going to use.

What is a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?

A VPN is a Virtual Private Network. It is an extension of a local network (LAN) over a public network or a network outside the Internet. With a VPN, the computer on the network can send and receive data on shared or public networks in the same way it would if it were a private network.

This works by establishing a virtual point-to-point connection by using dedicated connections, encryption, or using both ways to make it. That is why a VPN connection is technically the presence of a network (LAN) remotely, which guarantees work environments and administration of different types of data determined to a site.

How does a VPN work?

We can commonly find two types of VPN. We have those of remote access and those from site to site. The first one is usually used in companies where their workers need to make calls always and these are located in different regions of the country or outside the country. This way, they can communicate with the company more economically and securely since the privacy of the calls is guaranteed.

On the other hand, the site-to-site VPN is the one that we can commonly use at any time since it works by emulating a specific location which is indistinct to the user’s location, therefore a person who is in a country will appear connected to the VPN according to the country or area established by it, this type of connection is also basically an intranet.

VPNs can also be used in cases where a person is outside the country and needs to access websites where they can only do so from their country of residence. As a result, the VPN acts as if it were a proxy. However, it is a private network available to those who have paid for it or set up where appropriate.

A VPN can be offered under a service. There are many providers of this. However, this can also be done by a company or by a person in your own home to use it in cases similar to the one explained above.
